Al Koran's Professional Presentations
Hugh Miller:

This is the first of many re-releases by Martin Breese offering books previously published by Harry Stanley. Al Koran's Professional Presentations is a magical classic and was first published in 1967 by Harry Stanley at the Unique Magic Studio. The original publication was marred by poor photographic reproduction so this new edition from Martin Breese has illustrations by Paul Griffin based on the original photographs. Hugh Miller has contributed a fascinating and lengthy introduction which explains a great deal about the background of this book which is a 'must' for every performer's library. "Each effect is a stunner and the original Koran Medallion and many other now classic effects, are explained in detail."

Al Koran's Legacy
Hugh Miller:

Published by Repro Magic and now copyright Martin Breese.

OUT OF STOCK! - BEING REPRINTED!

I was recently able to negotiate an arrangement with Repro Magic to purchase the copyright to this wonderful book.   I have a few copies of this title available.  It is a large format, comb-bound volume containing some of Al’s greatest effects.  Amongst the material is Al Koran’s famous newspaper headline prediction: The Million Dollar Prediction and The Gold Medallion.  The Gold Medallion was first described and routined in Al’s Professional Presentations but now in this later title a simplified handling method is provided.  This is the balance of material that Koran used in his act on TV and in his stage act.   None of these items are pipe dreams and all are effects that have been proven in performance and still form the basis of many a mentalist’s act.   When this current stock is sold out I will be reproducing this book again as a hardback volume and perhaps with a new introduction by Hugh Miller.

We have three titles by Al Koran now plus our Magi-CD which allows you to hear Al Koran performing his various effects on TV.  The three titles are:  Al Koran’s Legacy,

Al Koran’s Professional Presentations and Mastered Amazement, which was produced together with Jack Lamonte.  Additionally for Al Koran fans we have The Magic of Al Koran edited by Martin Breese and this contains virtually all of the routines that Al Koran performed on television together with every word of patter and references to the methods used by Al Koran.  There is a great deal of bibliographic material as well by such people as Terry Seabrooke and Billy McComb both of whom knew Al well.

Please also watch this space for a new volume now in production in which almost all of Al Koran’s magic magazine contributions will appear.  Two of my most favourite mentalists were Al Koran and Chan Canasta and I think that both of these great entertainers have a great deal to offer any mentalist.

Read Reviews

For those who have been looking for the first 5 books that Jerry Sadowitz and Peter Duffie published through Martin Breese - there is good news. All five books have been reprinted in one volume called CardZones. These are:

Alternative Card Magic (Duffie/Sadowitz), Contemporary Card Magic (Duffie/Sadowitz), Cards Hit (Sadowitz), Close-up to the Point (Duffie) & Inspirations (Duffie/Sadowitz).

CardZones is printed on high quality gloss paper and it is a large format volume of 256 pages with over 100 illustrations by David Britland & Roy Johnson. The book has red cover boards with black foil printing on the front cover and the spine. This is a heavy tome.

"I received Card Zones yesterday and just wanted to tell you what a beautiful piece of work it is. You've really done proud by Peter and Jerry. I love the cover, both color and illustration. The inside layout for all the tricks is beautiful. I don't whether the illustrations are the originals or redone for this, but they are very good. - Robin Robertson, UK"

"The Skill range covered in the book is from moderate to advanced. It is not for the beginner but ideal for the reader who has a basic knowledge of card technique. Nothing is beyond the scope of the true enthusiast. If their peers conducted a poll. I know that the authors would emerge as two of the worlds formost originators of high quality material. To find out why I hold this opinion I recommend that you investigate Card Zones as soon as possible. - Roy Walton, Abracadabra (Goodliffe publications)"

Cards on the Table contains a variety of effects including Fetch which is an animated card discovery which you will use as soon as you read it.

There is much more including Name a Card Triumph.  When Jerry did this trick for us for the first time we asked him to repeat it.  The card was located so fast we thought it must be coincidence.  He did it five or six time more times but each time, from a shuffled deck and Jerry could produce any card named within seconds.

Cards on the Table - Soft back - contains 25 items in all. Top class card magic by Jerry Sadowitz.

Chan Canasta - A Remarkable Man, Volume 1
David Britland:

Stock No. - N/A

This was the first book in the series and it caused a complete sensation. We sold out but our printers found several boxes that they had forgotten to deliver to us. So we are back in stock now. This book attracted a great deal of attention and many wonderful feature reviews. For example

Peter Zenner: Martin, has excelled himself with the production values. It looks beautiful; maybe it is the most attractive looking book I have ever seen. If you are interested in Canasta then you will have to buy the book.

Bob Gill: I'm not sure that there have been other books quite like this. You know those reviews you read which say of novels, 'I couldn't put it down 'til I'd read it through from cover to cover'? Well, I'll cheerfully admit to devouring this volume at one sitting until well into the early hours; it's it a comparative rarity in contemporary magic publishing: a rattling good read.

Sal Franchino (USA): It is superbly produced. The binding and cover are absolute dynamite. Thank you for such a good work. It is a delight to receive a product that lives up to its promise and delivers value!

The Mental Magick of Basil Horwitz, Vol. 1
Edited by Martin Breese and illustrated by Eric Mason.

Softback reprint in an edition of just 100 copies.

We were about to run out of this publication but
managed to get a supply from my warehouse in the USA.

BACK IN STOCK !

This book was first published in 1981 and has been reprinted several times since then.  The current reprint is a softback as was the first edition.   The book was created from the Magicassette recordings on Basil Horwitz made by Martin Breese.   The book received rave reviews from every magical magazine around the world.  The opening chapter by Basil Horwitz details a method of linking a show with charity and using it to make a big income for the charity and a big income for the performer.   During Basil's lifetime he was also involved in investment and finance.  He used to perform for charity and demonstrated mental miracles that stunned his audience.  When each member of the audience left the show Basil ended up with the name, address and telephone number of hundreds of people desperate for him to ring and discuss financial plans, investment and insurance.  The seven tricks in the book are all total stunners.  The best I have ever ever published.  Over the years I have heard of top magicians around the world who have each used one or more of the effects on tv or to close their shows.  So for sure I know that every effect in the book has been used by big names on tv!  One man whose name I forget wrote to thank me and Basil for providing an effect that had gained him a brilliant reputation as a closer!  Basil worked on five books with us and so far we have published four of them and have one more ready to release and a further title to be gathered together from tapes and notes left to us after his sad demise. A classic of mentalism.

We were about to run out of this publication but

BACK IN STOCK !

Seven more incredible demonstrations of the paranormal that will entertain and perplex the most demanding audience.  When I met Basil many, many years ago (well over 20 years ago) I saw him demonstrating his brilliant Poker Deal.  He dealt cards to himself and to a spectator and then put a £50 note on the table and if Basil could beat the spectator he kept the money and if he lost he would lose £50.  This is repeated over and over again with new hands being dealt and the spectator having more and more choice yet the magician never loses any of the money at all. The final part of the routine allows the spectator to see cards face up and being given the choice to choose the cards for his hand as they are dealt.  Again the magician keeps his money.   I was baffled by this effect and asked Basil to let me put it in the first volume but he refused.  I plagued him for a year or so and it is now released here in Vol. 2 along with 6 other effects all of which would gain any good mentalist a brilliant reputation.

Both these books will be sold out in no time so order as soon as you can.

Just a note of thanks for the new Canasta CD and Horwitz volume, both of which accompanied me on a trip last week to Costa Rica for some performances. Both are exciting and valuable additions to mentalism. The Horwitz material is up to its usual high standard, and it was a thrill to listen to Canasta in performance. Kudos to you and David for a marvelous script and analysis.

Introduction by Andy Nyman.

To say that I was honoured to be asked to write this introduction is somewhat of an understatement. When I came across Basil’s first book I couldn’t believe it. Here was mentalism that fitted everything I had been searching for. It was clean, simple in plot and direct. In fact the more I read the more I was astonished and frustrated by the simplicity of Basil’s thinking; “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that?” was a response I had about every five pages. I feel particularly indebted to Basil as I have partly built my reputation on one of his routines (if you think I’m telling you which one, think again).

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Basil. What struck me more than anything is the enthusiasm with which he performs everything. His style is the antithesis of mine. Where I am brash he is subtle. Where I am loud he is the essence of silent power. He disarms with his childlike twinkle and cheeky sense of humour. All in all what Basil seems to embody is a rare thing; believability.

His thinking is a lesson in disguising simple and devious techniques, therefore sending the spectator to the only conclusion they can possibly reach: that he is reading their mind.

Any book on magic will provide some things that suit some people and some that suit others. How many times have you witnessed a trick and been fooled by it, only to then find out it is in a book you have and that you disregarded the trick when you read it. I honestly feel that every trick Basil has published contains a germ of something usuable and magical. If a theme or a routine doesn’t instantly leap out at you, read it again and I guarentee that there will be a gem hiding that you missed. I am not going to point you to any particular routines, as the selection of one’s material is so subjective, you must make your own decisions.

This is the fidith book that Martin has published of Basil’s material and it represents both new and cherished effects from a man who, I believe, has made a contribution to the art of mentalism that is as important as that of either Annemann or Corinda. I sincerely hope you read and re-read this book, it deserves your time and attention, we are so lucky to have it.

Thank you Basil.

Andy Nyman’s wonderful introduction to this book says more than I can ever say about it.  I first met Basil at a Brighton IBM convention.  We got on well and I invited him to make a series of Magicassette audio recordings with me.  Later these were turned into The Magick of Basil Horwitz Vol 1.  This was one of the most successful books that I have ever published.  It contains just seven effects but each is innovative and highly creative.  As I have mentioned (probably frequently) before the book provoked a vast amount of feedback and it was clear from the letters that we received from all around the world that each effect was being used by top professionals on big stage and TV shows.  One mentalist with a vast following wrote to say that he owed a big debt to Basil in that he closed his act every night with one of the effects in the book.

The other volumes followed slowly and they have been released at intervals over the years.   Basil passed away some years ago following an illness that he had bravely endured.  I lost a good and kind friend and magic lost one of its most creative thinkers. Basil left behind a lot of recordings which David Britland is currently transcribing and editing and these will form one more volume in the series.

This slim hardback contains eight brilliant effects. They are sure to be used by professionals and semi-pros for years to come. I am proud to have known Basil and very sad to have lost such a good friend.  His memory will live on forever in the Magick he created.

Here are the eight effects:

  • Challenge Subconscious Pick Pocketing

  • Challenge Body Language Body Language Zodiac Test

  • Challenge Card and Design Test

  • Challenge Diary and Body Language Test

  • ESP Incredible Memory Test

  • Body Language Challenge Poker Test

  • Body Language Voice and Memory

  • Special Bonus Routine: Body Language Challenge

THE PROFESSIONAL TOUCH BY BILLY McCOMB is back in print again and this time as a hardback. This is a revised edition of the book with a superb introduction by Kirk Charles reproduced with kind permission of the Linking Ring.

We first produced this important book back in 1987 as a softback.  Billy reveals some of his greatest routines in amazing detail. The book is edited and illustrated by David Britland with extra illustrations by JAT.

Billy McComb is one of the world's top cabaret magicians. He has worked all kinds of venues and performed all kinds of magic and in his book shares some of his many experiences, thoughts and routines and describes how you too can give the professional touch to your act. Being a professional means thinking about your act in a commercial way. Here Billy deals with such points as misdirection, patter, close-up, opening effects, cabaret - in fact a wealth of information gained during his many years as a professional entertainer.

Billy touches on so many varied and interesting subjects connected with show business that it is impossible to list them here. We can promise you that reading about them will be an entertaining and educational experience. In addition to the tricks and routines explained in this book, Billy has also included complete descriptions of three cabaret routines used by him for many years. Every nuance of the performance is explained. Not just how you do it but, more importantly, why you do it.

A study of these three routines and their construction should pay dividends when applied to your own act. This is professional magic by one of our most entertaining professionals. Amongst the routines and effects described you will find The Nap Hand routine, the Ring on Stick and Billy's Bill in Lemon.

Subtle Miracles
Peter Duffie

Read Review...

Peter Duffie is one of the world's most creative cardmen and Subtle Miracles gathers together some of his most inventive work. Many of these effects were marketed as exclusive manuscripts and are now brought together for the first time, together with a selection of brand new routines using equally clever methods.

Seventeen ingenious card miracles are featured in this collection, including:

Impulse
Two cards transpose under impossible conditions. The finish in which one card has a hole cut through the centre  and yet still changes places with the second card has been described as, "Not Possible!"

Tarradiddle
A completely self-working Lie Detector trick. The spectator can tell the truth or lies but the deck will always find him out. What's more, you don't even know the identity of the selected card yourself until the pack reveals it!

Flashpoint
The ultimate Holey Point of Departure. A chosen card disappears from between two blank cards. The card is visible right up until the last moment through holes cut in the middle of the blanks. Yet it disappears without a trace and the blanks are handed out for examination.

Choca Block
A completely hands-off cards across with an extremely clever method. Two selected cards disappear from a box on the table and reappear in a packet of cards held by the spectator. At no time does the performer touch anything! And it's completely self-working too.

All Clear
You Do As I Do with a twist. Under the fairest of conditions the magician and spectator chose identical cards, twice! But the kicker comes when the rest of the deck is shown to be completely blank. No gimmicks. No switches. Everything examined. Easy to do.

Plus:

Pure Devilry, in which a diary predicts two selected cards; Clear Thought, a no questions asked revelation of a though-of card; Polythene Pam, a monte routine the spectator cannot lose and Dichotomy, a prediction effect with a finish that is simply beyond belief.

Plus eight further knock-out routines!

Telepathy Personified by Ron and Nancy Spencer

We were about to run out of this publication but
managed to get a supply from my warehouse in the USA.

BACK IN STOCK !

For years Ron and Nancy have fooled audiences worldwide with their Minds in Harmony act. Here, for the first time, they reveal all of their treasured secrets - secrets that will enable the reader to recreate this act in its entirety. In his foreword to this book Edwin Dawes says: "Despite the numerous times I have seen Ron and Nancy Spencer present their act it has never palled, the freshness and apparent spontaneity of their interaction (not to mention the challenge for the magician of endeavouring to detect their methods!) has captured the imagination. For much of the second half of the twentieth century Minds in Harmony brought pleasure and mystery to audiences. Now, as Ron and Nancy have retired from performing, they have decided to divulge the details of their techniques, a decision that will be welcomed by those who wish to emulate them as well as by those who are simply curious to learn how it was done. Hard work is the short answer but the reader will find everything he or she needs to set about mastering a two-person telepathic act and one that can be constructed from material that has been tried, tested and proven to be hugely successful."

The Spencer's complete act is revealed here for the first time anyone with the desire to learn a baffling two-way telepathy act need look no further. This wonderful book has 140 pages together with numerous line drawings and photographic illustrations. Top Secrets
Terri Rogers:

We were about to run out of this publication but
managed to get a supply from my warehouse in the USA.

BACK IN STOCK !

This is, without question, Terri Rogers greatest book of magic and the finest book I have published. There are 128 pages and 15 magical effects together with an introduction by Max Maven. All of the tricks in the book were meant to be released as dealer effects but I just didn't have time to put them out. So here they are in book form together with some bonus effects which were previously only released as pamphlets such as StarGate, BlockBuster and Word of Mind.

Flexi-Card is a stunning new idea in which a jumbo card can be divided into not four quarters but six quarters. Slowly as the card is unfolded and opened again rabbits and large holes appear in the corners. At the conclusion there are large holes through three of the corners. Probably one of the most original ideas in magic. Just wait for the reviews of this book! Just wait.

BuckledBunkum is another miracle: a continuous cloth belt is shown and on it is threaded a soft plastic belt buckle which is red on one side and black on the other. Using clever topological methods the magician shows how the buckle can be turned over on the belt but when the spectator has a go he will never be able to do it.

There is so much more in this book that it would take a book to describe each effect If you have enjoyed material from Martin Breese over the last 25 years, are knocked out by the thinking of Terri Rogers then just get this book immediately!
