Bramah Bowls

IN CERAMIC JUST LIKE THE LOTAPOT

The Bramah Bowls are exact copies of the traditional brass Brahmah Bowls that a good friend lent to me and suggested that I had made in Ceramic. I must thank Brian Gray my friend from London who urged me to get them made.

The Bramah Bowls offer a very similar effect to the classic Rice Bowls but a circular disc of celluloid is not required and both bowls can be shown to be empty and there is no chance of a tell-tale reflection from the celluloid disc as in the Rice Bowl set up. Once again rice or something similar is put in one bowl and the two bowls placed together and the rice has doubled. The rice is poured into a container and the bowls are placed face to face yet again and water miraculously appears and is poured from bowl to bowl. One of these bowls is gimmicked just like a lotapot with a secret reservoir of water and the other gimmicked so that it has a much smaller interior than the other. When placed together as one bowl is smaller inside than the other the rice appears to have doubled and then when all the rice is removed and the secret reservoir is allowed to open the performer can pour water or any other liquid from bowl to bowl. The Rice Bowls and the Brahmah Bowls have always been great items but as the Brahmah Bowls are now made by a top potter in ceramic material or clay they are absolutely out of this world. Each bowl is about three and a quarter inches high and they measure roughly four inches in diameter.

Quite frankly they are works of art to be treasured and I am very proud to be able to offer them to the magical fraternity. In addition to thanking Brian Gray for coming up with the idea I must also thank someone I have known for 20 years or more as well, for getting them made for me and this kind person is my very close friend Martin Duffy. The Pavilion Music Box

The Pavilion Music Box: This is yet another miracle effect. The box itself is not made by my favourite craftsman but it is beautifully built for me in Morocco out of rare olive wood. As you tell the story above if you choose to do so you can make the box play its tune as you open and close the box. Later in the story you are able to make the music box play even though you are standing several feet away from it.

As the story comes to its conclusion you can allow any of the spectators to examine the box and they will be as amazed as the Museum Manager when they discover that they could examine it for ever and ever and will never find anything musical about the box which is completely empty. I will not describe how the box works but I will say that I have had one in my home for many years now. As my guests arrive I open the box and allow it to play. Later during the evening I might tell the story of Henry from the Royal Pavilion and I can assure you that when the box is finally examined and found to be just an empty box no one says a word and there is just a completely amazed expression on the faces of all in the room.

Brian Gray who owned one of the original box made about 15 years ago does not use it in his home but uses it when working tables and told me exactly how he does it. Russell Hall the owner of Magick Enterprises has one as well. I don’t do much in the way of shows and I prefer to have it ready to go in my home.

I will not give a clue or reveal how this effect works. It is simply brilliant and worth every penny of its price.

In order to find the right boxes for this effect I bought them from a box manufacturer in Morocco. Some of the boxes have a flat lid and some a domed lid and the one in the photograph showing this effect has a domed top. Each box varies in appearance slightly. If anyone can find the mechanism in the box I will willingly give the sum of £1000 to charity. There is absolutely nowhere in the box for any kind of mechanism to be hidden. And that is the magic of the Pavilion Music Box.

When I last produced ten of these music boxes about ten years ago I sold them to magic dealers with the idea that they would sell them through their magic stores to other magicians. I was rather amazed to find out much later that three magic dealers kept the boxes for themselves. I did exactly the same. All of us just wanted to keep it for ourselves rather than sell it. I am glad that I now have ten of these boxes ready for sale again and they are made for me by Mike McGrath who has the skill and ability to take a magical concept from me and turn it into reality. Mike McGrath is not known to the magic community but he is certainly a genius in a very specialised field. Thank you Mike for all your help and clever ideas.

This time I hope that magic dealers will not keep the boxes and that they will be sold to keen magicians who will buy one and use it over and over again. Absolutely no sleight of hand is required just the ability to tell my story with a straight face. Completely self working. Full instructions, hints and tips supplied and the box is guaranteed for its lifetime.

The Chink Box

Here is an effect that was manufactured for me by a craftsman who has now retired and will not be making any more of this fantastic effect. We have about a dozen in stock and then until I can find another skilled craftsman to make this for us that will be that.

As you will see on the demonstration this is not only a great trick to fool layman but knocks magicians out as well. The effect is that a small box is shown and passed out for examination. It has a slot at the top of the box and a similar slot directly underneath. Inside the box is a small sheet of glass which is removed for examination. The magician has the box examined and the sheet of glass dropped into position and a coin such as a half dollar or £2 coin is also passed for examination. The coin is gently placed into the top slot and then slowly pushed through the sheet of glass and it emerges out of the slot below.

I used to demonstrate this effect at conventions and Stephen Tucker who used to work for me and was also the editor and publisher of his magazine Spell-Binder wrote up the effect in his magazine and called my routine the "Breeze Wheeze" and told the story how at a convention I was demonstrating this effect and mystifying a potential customer.

I don't really remember the incident which took place years ago. I showed how the coin would penetrate the glass in one box and then had the inspiration to pick up another box from the table. This was held underneath the original box and the trick was performed but with the variation of allowing the coin to penetrate not just one box containing a sheet of glass but with two boxes. Then I picked up another box and allowed the coin to penetrate the glass in all three boxes. The magician asked the price and said that he would take all three boxes! If I had had any sense I would have done the trick with at least four boxes!!!!.

Now there is something very special about this trick and routine in that the Chink Box is generally faked and has a sliding device which can be pulled back with the thumbs so that the glass momentarily clears the slots and the coin can be dropped through from top to bottom. The same trick has also been released over the years with a metal ball that slowly penetrates through a round hole and a sheet of glass.

Now when I perform for magicians they automatically assume that the trick works in the traditional manner which basically is mechanical and using a feked box. With my version of the Chink Box the box can be thoroughly examined for the simple reason that it is not feked in any way. It is just a box with two slots a hinged lid and a sheet of glass sitting within the box. I just love watching knowledgeable magicians seeing the effect and then smiling and then giving the box a rigorous examination and when they find out that the box is not feked in any way .... quite simply they haven't got a clue.

The price is £45 and the box is inlaid with different woods and made by one of the top craftsman in the world. A modicum of bluff is required and the sort of sleight of hand that anyone can learn in 5 seconds. I always say that if I can do a trick then anyone can do it. I can do and so can you or anyone else.
 

The Duffie Diary

You begin by shuffling a deck and placing it on the table. You never touch the deck again. You now give the spectator your pocket diary which he may examine before placing it in his pocket. You never touch the diary again.

The spectator will now create a random date. He cuts the deck – this is a free cut – and turns over the card cut to. The value of this card will represent the month. This can truly be any value. He counts the cards that he cut – this will represent the day. This can truly be any quantity so long as it doesn’t exceed the number of possible days in a month. You can even offer him the chance to change his mind and do it again. It will not make any difference to the outcome. The trick cannot fail.

Maybe he cut to a Four spot – the fourth month is April. Maybe the number of cards he cut is 15. That is APRIL 15th. The spectator opens the diary at April 15 and reads out what is written against that date. You explain that the diary will tell him about his lucky card.

The diary might say, “21 DOWN!” But this is not a bizarre crossword puzzle. The diary is telling him where to find his LUCKY CARD. He counts to the 21st card in the deck. This card may be the AS. Finally you ask him to look at the back of the diary where he finds a card. Written on this card is “YOUR LUCKY CARD IS THE ACE OF SPADES.”

The Most Beautiful Trick in the World.

This is one of the funniest and most startling ways of producing a selected card that I have even seen. In effect a card is selected and returned to the pack. The card can be marked if so desired. A small box is shown; it is circular with a hinged lid, rather like a ladies powder compact, but smaller. It is placed on top of the pack and opened. Out pops a jack in the box type of snake with the chosen card stuck to its nose. It is as quick and clean as that: There is no fumbling, palming or anything of that kind. The impact comes because the card is bigger than the box that it is seen to come out of. I have seen this effect performed for laymen and magicians. Always the result has been a gasp of amazement followed by a huge laugh as the audience realize the impossibility of what they have just witnessed. There are no awkward angles and you can be as close as you like. (Review in Pabular magazine by Walt Lees).

This is an unbelievable book test. Just imagine taking a modern book; perhaps a best seller in the bookshops right now. The book is genuine and is completely unfaked in any way. You can even ask a member of the audience or perhaps someone on a radio show that you will talking to, to bring along a copy of the Da Vinci Code or whatever you choose to use.

You have the book examined and you ask a member of the audience to tell you how many pages there are in the book. They might say that there are 216 pages in the book. You then ask them to give you a number between 1 ands 216. Whatever number is offered to you, you tell them that the number will be used to select the page, the line on the page and the word on the actual line.

This is all you have to do and you will be able to tell them the line and the meaning of the line.

Some simple memory work is required before you start the effect and once you have it all in your mind you will be able to perform one of the most baffling magic tricks ever. On the first page of the full colour booklet which has also been reproduced in this advert you will see my introduction to this effect. This is a brilliant effect and if you want to achieve a miracle you will need to spend a little time indulging in some memory work. It is all incredibly easy and when I decided to perform this effect in front of an audience consisting of two university professors, the director of the Edinburgh Festival, a famous poet and a leading portrait painter I took off two hours before the performance to learn a couple of things. The effect on my highly intellectual audience was one of stunned silence. For what seemed to be about five minutes there seemed to be a stunned silence. Every single person to witness the effect was completely blown away.

i spent two hours with my memory work task before the performance but that was just not for that performance but for the future and for every time I perform the effect.. You do your memory work once and thereafter without any further work you can perform this amazing effect over and over again.

I rate this as one of the four best effects that I have ever performed. They are all book tests and they are all brilliant. The book test by David Hoy which uses two unfeked books freely chosen, the MasterKey by Terri Rogers and the classic Chan Canasta book test as described in Vol. One of David Britland's masterful book on Chan Canasta. Val came up with a brilliant idea and put it into a simple booklet. I have edited and updated the booklet and have spared no expense to make it look absolutely stunning. Today is a great day. Val would be proud of me and of the book and I am grateful to Val for allowing me to release his unbelievable effect.

This new add-a-number pad is based on the principle of the Basil Horwitz Wallet and locks firmly using rare earth magnets. It is the mobile phone which was in the sealed paper bag and when answered the two spectator find that they are speaking to each other.

Full performing details of these effects plus others are provided in the comprehensive instructions supplied. The Horwitz Add-a-Number Pad can be used without the physical intervention of the performer. The pads is passed from one spectator to the next and each is asked to write numbers in sum form and until the wallet is actually closed nothing happens. Once the wallet is closed the real numbers and the sum are exchanged for the fake sum which will add up to the number to be forced by the magician. The last but one spectator is asked to CLOSE the pad and then to throw it on to someone else in the audience. The very act of closing the wallet causes the magnets to lock and the next time the wallet is opened the sum facing the spectator is the forced sum and the real sum is tightly locked away.
