Number 6

TRIO SONATA

Aldo Colombini

I have used this routine for long time. It is not difficult to do and contains a lot of magic. You need to be able to perform the Atfus move (Any Time Face Up Switch) by Ed Marlo and one of Flushtration count type of display.

EFFECT: Three cards are selected by three spectators and the magician selects a card as well (the Joker or a prominent cards such the AS). The four cards become all Jokers. The four cards immediately are spread and they are seen to be the four Kings. The three selected cards appear reversed in the deck and the Joker is removed from the pocket!

SET-UP:
Start with the four Kings on top of the face-down deck.

PERFORMANCE:
Holding the deck face down in your left-hand dealing position obtain a break below the top four cards (Kings) and perform the Braue reversal ending up with the deck face up and the four Kings reversed on the bottom. (Briefly: Your right hand grips the deck from above and the right thumb takes hold the break at the four Kings. The left hand cuts half of the cards from below the break turn that pile face up and places it on top. The right thumb keeps on holding the break in the middle. The left hand cuts all the cards below the break turns them over and places them on top. The four Kings are face down at the bottom of the face-up deck.)

Spread the cards between the hands without exposing the four reversed cards on the bottom. Remove the Joker (or the AS for lack of Jokers), turn it face down and place it on the bottom. Have three spectators take a card each and place them as well face down on the bottom. Flip the deck over and you have on top eight face-up cards: The three selections, followed by the Joker and the four face-up Kings.

The right hand lifts the whole face up section (easy due to the natural break) and at the same time the right thumb lifts also the first face-down card, below the face-up packet. The right thumb keeps a break between the face-down cards and the face-up pile. You are ready to perform the Atfus move by Ed Marlo.

The left thumb peels off the top face-up card onto the deck. Take this card below the right hand packet (the right thumb has now a break above two cards). Repeat with the second card and with the third. When you square the third card below the packet, drop all the cards beneath the break onto the deck and move the right hand away with five cards (the Joker above the four Kings). The three selections are face up beneath the top face-down card of the deck. Leave the right-hand packet on the table with the Joker showing. Casually cut the deck and complete the cut. Leave the deck face down on the table.

Pick up the packet, flip it face down and spread the cards showing four face down cards, keeping the last two as one. Square the packet and with a Bro. John Hamman flushtration count show four Jokers. (See the trick “Followers” for a brief explanation of the count. In this case the count is repeated four times and the last card shown is actually a double one which is placed on top of the other three cards already in the left hand). At the end of the count the Joker is second from the top.

Slide the bottom card off with the right hand and flip it over face up onto the left hand cards, revealing a King. Immediately, flip the card face down onto the packet, flip the cards over and show four Kings with an Ascanio spread. (Briefly: The right hand grips the packet from above. With your left forefinger move the bottom card of the packet to the left, then with your second finger move the second card to the left as well. Then with your left thumb move the top card to the left, leaving two cards as one in the right hand. You’ll show four Kings. Move the double card of the spread to the bottom and flip the packet over face down in your left hand.

With your right hand spread the deck face down and show the three cards face up in the middle. Under cover of this surprise, you have all the time to palm the top card of the packet (Joker) with your right hand and produce it from the pocket for a good finale of the routine.
