A long time ago Chris Kenworthy bought out a
force deck which I thought was fantastic. You could fan the
entire deck of cards and show the index of every single card and then
turn the fanned deck over and force a card by having them just touch
the back of any card which when turned over was in fact the force
card.
A lot magicians went to work to make up these
decks using wire wool and stick on indices and it was only when the
Monte Cristo deck was made available together with a little of its
history that I discovered that the method and the deck itself was
something that went back in time.
The man who has just had this deck made in
bicycle cards has written up a little of its history as follows:
The Monte Cristo Pack or ("Peerless Monte-Cristo
Cards") is a Forcing Deck developed by Henry Hardin, produced by
Theodore DeLand and put on the market in December 1908. As advertised
in 1909, "One of the card hits of the century, the nearest approach to
the supernatural yet discovered, a spectator looks at any card in the
deck and suite name, etc., is found written on a piece of paper in a
sealed envelope in another spectator's possession." A later
development of the deck was the Telomatic Deck and was an early
version of the Tossed Out Deck. References: • Edwards Monthly,
