Light & Heavy Glass

One of my magical friends in the USA wanted to purchase one of these effects and he found that he couldn’t locate it in his own country and asked me to see if I could help. I managed to trace the manufacturer who sells the trick under a different name to the one that I have given it. I opened the packet and played around with the effect for a while and when I was ready to perform I had a go. I showed it to my ex-wife who can spot a magic principle or method at 100 yards and to my clever assistant who also knows a thing or two about magic. They were both totally baffled. I then showed it to a young lady of my acquaintance who hasn’t really heard about the word “Hypnotism”. I told her that I could make all sorts of strange things happen in her mind by just clicking my fingers and staring into her eyes. I did just that and performed the effect and now she is completely convinced that hypnotism is really real. She absolutely believes that by staring into her eyes I can make strange things happen.

What is the effect? The title that I have given it makes it pretty obvious but to clarify, this is what it is. You take a drinking glass and show it all around and if it is full of water you pour out the water or drink it and then you can place the tumbler on absolutely any portable firm surface that you wish to use. I used an empty DVD case but you can use a small tray, a book or basically any firm, flat and portable surface.

You place the tumbler on the book, for instance, and then you cover it with a handkerchief or scarf and you ask the spectator to lift the glass up by a couple of inches. They do that and everything is as it should be. You pretend to hypnotise them and tell them that the glass will be too heavy to lift and again ask them to lift the glass. There is absolutely no way that they can lift the glass (actually is made out of plastic) from whatever surface it is resting on.

The glass can be shown all around and there are no attachments or magnets or hooks or extras. As far as I am concerned it is a total baffler and at £15 post free anywhere it is one of the best tricks of its type to have come along in years. It may well be a really old principle that is used but I have never come across it before.
