THE PORTAL

For quite a while now Steve Shufton had been telling me of a brand new effect that he has been working on. I had no idea of what the effect was at all but Steve told me that when I saw it it would knock me sideways.

A package arrived from Steve just two days ago and it didn't knock me sideways!

It knocked me off my chair completely.

I had share my enthusiasm with someone and decided to show it to a magician friend as I just couldn't contain my excitement. My friend Lynn, who performs as The Great Leonardo, dropped what he was doing and came round to see me immediately. He is a talented and very busy magician but he could be called traditional. He is not generally impressed by much that is being put out by the young whizz kids who couldn't write a book but can dem a trick in front of a video camera and put it out on the unsuspecting magical public. I trust his judgement that has been gained by working as full time professional magician.

He sat patiently in front of the DVD player and I put on the DVD that comes with The Portal. He sat in total silence as he viewed the screen. When the demonstration was over and before we moved on to the full explanation on screen by David Regal he nodded his head and asked me to pause the machine.

He looked and me and I feared the worst as he started to talk. This is what he said: "That is the best trick I have ever seen in my life!" were his very words.

I couldn't agree more. This is the most creative and highly baffling trick I have ever seen as well. I ordered one hundred by email immediately and they are on their way to me as I write.

The basic prop is a neatly made and completely examinable black wooden board roughly the size of a jumbo playing card. In the centre is a round hole. Anything that passes through the hole - The Portal into another dimension you might call it - undergoes a change. You put a white ball through the hole and it turns green or yellow. You put a small ball through the hole and it changes into a large ball. It is simply staggering and almost beyond belief. The board can be used to change a ball into a coin or one coin into another. At all times the board is shown both sides and your hands are clearly empty. The Portal comes with some extra bits and pieces including the DVD and a number of coloured balls.

There is almost no need for sleight of hand because the board does all the work for you. There are no slots or extra holes in the board or Portal. The board can be examined and basically there is nothing to be found.
